Whānau Support

Nau mai haere Mai.

Newlands College actively plans for, encourages and supports Māori Students and their whānau in their pathway to succeed highly in all areas of Newlands College.

Newlands College seeks to promote high quality Māori Language education in the form of Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori, Māori Performing Arts and Kapa Haka.

Student leadership is promoted through the Kōmiti Māori which organises events such as Matariki, Māori Language week, professional development for staff, and haerenga/trips. The Pou Rangatahi/Māori Student Representative on the Student Executive has responsibility for running this Kōmiti. The Pou Rangatahi also has a seat on the appointment panels of all Māori Staff Roles as a voice for Rangatahi Māori at Newlands College.

The Whānau Advisory, entitled He Rōpu Manaakitanga mō te Whānau, is a group of parents, staff and students who meet regularly throughout the year to discuss student data and implement strategies relating to improved outcomes for Māori students.
