Pathways, Gateway, Trades Academy and Star

STAR Programmes

Through the STAR programme, students are eligible to access a wide range of opportunities in the senior school. Tertiary institutions and private training organisations develop and coordinate these opportunities to allow students to explore future pathways. Some examples students can attend include:

  • STAR Taster Courses
  • University papers
  • Workplace visits
  • Leadership workshops
  • Further student education

Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 can attend taster courses at local polytechnics or private training providers. Students can participate in various courses, from hairdressing and beauty therapy to the trades or attend courses to learn about entering the Police or Uniformed services. Participation in taster courses allows students to explore potential career pathways and make informed choices about their education and future career options.

Gateway

The Gateway programme allows senior students to be engaged in workplace learning. Students learn about workplace safety before engaging in work experience. Students in the Gateway programme are provided with a sustained period in a workplace environment and explore a future career pathway. Each student pursues an individual learning plan and gains industry-specific experience.

The programme suits students who want to test a particular career area or are unsure of a career choice and want to try one possible option. This programme prepares students for the reality of today's workplace and enhances the prospects of gaining employment in their chosen area of interest.

Students also work to complete Industry Training Organisation (ITO) standards specific to the industry where they are placed. Training in First Aid, Interview Techniques and Work Safety is provided for all class members.

TRADES Academy

The Trades Academy offers Level 2/3 practical learning programmes in various vocational strands. Students attend either Whitireia or Weltec two days a week and their school programme three days a week throughout the year.  This is an excellent opportunity for students considering leaving school before the end of Year 13 to pursue a vocational career pathway.

There is a selection process: students need to complete an application, attend an interview at the polytech and require the endorsement of their Dean. Each course offers approximately 40 Level 2/3 credits with the exception of Health Science which is a one day course offering 20 credits.

Applications for enrolment open at the end of August and interviews will take place from late Term 3 prior to the year that the course starts.   Applications can sometimes be accepted until the start date of the course in February if places are still available.  The Careers Department welcomes the opportunity to talk to you.
